For some builders, custom means a buyer gets to choose a few colors and whether or not to opt for a finished room over the garage. For David McLaughlin, of McLaughlin Construction Company, custom means starting from scratch each time he begins a new home. "Every house I build is different," he confirms "They're one of a kind type homes."

Having a builder who's always willing to start new from the ground up has been a big draw for clients who want homes designed expressly with their unique tastes and needs in mind. The houses he built in the Hickory Station Estates and Village Farms Subdivisions in Chesapeake sold quickly to buyers looking for something out of the ordinary.

Now he's getting ready to build in two brand new Chesapeake communities - Hunter's Ridge and White Egret Cove, both located in the Hickory area.

Hunter's Ridge will be a small, exclusive community containing 29 high-end all-brick estates when it's complete. The large 3 acre lots guarantee both room to breathe and a sense of privacy, yet shopping, restaurants, and recreation remain within easy reach.

Prices will range from the high $700s to well over $1.5 million.

White Egret Cove will contain seven custom homes in a quiet neighborhood designed with only one way in and one way out. The upscale homes, starting in the high $500s, will sit on 1/3 acre lots, perfectly sized for buyers who prefer less land to maintain.

While every home will be unique, buyers can expect to find one unifying theme in both Hunter's Ridge and White Egret Cove - quality.

Homes will feature granite countertops in the kitchen, ceramic tile in the baths, hardwood floors and several richer signature touches of a McLaughlin home such as extensive trim and custom woodwork with extra detailing.

McLaughlin's company does all the work in-house, including the design, which is unusual for a builder. "I have a great deal of experience as a framer and a trim carpenter, and there's not any aspect of building a home that I haven't done myself, from wiring to pouring concrete. I'm very conscious of the design load characteristics and the things it takes to put together a house in the right way," he explains.  It's a background that gives him both the depth and the skills necessary to provide this type of one-stop shopping to clients.

One advantage this approach offers is a much shorter turnaround time, says McLaughlin, "Rather than having to work with an architect or a designer, you're communicating directly with the person who's going to be building the house. I'm very much a hands-on builder."
